Well, you would assume that with what I do, that I would have total control over my brain and my emotional state. Think again!
I work hard to implement all the stuff I talk about, and have been doing well, but I had a set-back today which serves as a perfect example of what can happen when we are not mindful, and we allow our emotions to take over.
I today travelled to Canberra – I am delivering a workshop on Becoming a Neuro-Leader. My flight was due to leave at 1:30 pm – I was sure about that.
Now sadly, I have a reputation for getting times (and days) wrong – and being in denial about double-checking. I grew up in Dalby, and I once organised 15 of my friends to take a trip to Brisbane to see the stage show – Cats. My friend Charlie said to me “isn’t it this weekend?” and confident, too-organised me said ‘No, it’s next weekend’. We travelled the next week, only to turn up and find we were a week late. Yet I didn’t double check! What is that!!
So today, working to my usual tight schedule of leaving for the airport ‘just in time’, the hardwiring in my brain kept reminding me that I had better just check again. I did, and had a heart attack, as the paperwork said 1:10 pm. I panicked, screamed at hubby – we have to go NOW I’m going to miss my flight! Raced out the door, still screaming at hubby (it’s somehow his fault!) and pushed the speed limit. I called Qantas on the way to find that 1:10 was the boarding time – and I just made it!
Essentially, the combination of my emotional brain fired, it shut down my logical brain (that would have read the bit in front of the 1:10 pm – ie, boarding time) and accessed my hardwired brain which said ‘You always get the times wrong!’ and off I went!
And all of this was made possible because I had too much ‘stuff’ going on in my brain, and that weakened my executive brain, giving my emotional brain the opportunity to fire up and take over!
