I want my kids to eat fruit.

When I put the fruit in the fridge, they don’t eat it. So I put it out on the kitchen bench.

It sends a subliminal message – this family eats fruit. It’s easy for them to access. When they say ‘I’m hungry’ I only have to point. It works, and it’s simple for all parties involved.

Does your team know how you feel about what’s going on in your workplace and in your team? Do they understand your philosophy on leadership and other relevant issues?

Do they know, respect and appreciate your weaknesses and do they have permission to support you on those? Do they know and respect your strengths and have permission to seek your support on those?

Do you have boundaries and do they know about them?

Have you put your fruit on the kitchen table, or is it hidden in the back of the fridge!!

As humans, we love certainty. And we also live in our heads. And we forget that the conversation going on in our head may not have made it into the real world.

Take some time to get clear on your leadership philosophy and boundaries. What do you value, what do you not value, what do you expect of your team, and what can they expect of you. What are your core beliefs around your area of expertise, about work/life balance, around self-leadership and teamwork.

Formulate your thoughts and strategically share them with your team…put your fruit out on the kitchen bench.

It sends a subliminal message…this team shares and connects. This team values authenticity and vulnerability. It works, and it’s simple for all parties involved.

Then of course, get them to add their fruit as well…

The more we know about each other, the more we can predict the behaviour and reactions of others, and the more psychologically safe we feel at work.

Works with your kids too!

What will you rewire (do differently) today?
